Pastor, Find Your Identity in Christ

목사여, 자신의 정체성을 그리스도 안에서 찾으라!

Pastors are a motley group of souls. We represent different personalities and tribes, different methodologies and styles, not to mention denominations, traditions, and theologies. But there is something many of us have in common—a profound sense of insecurity for which the only antidote is the gospel. It’s easy to succumb to the temptation to compare one’s ministry to that of another pastor, or give in to the need to impress others and be liked.

목회자들은 너무도 많은 다른 점을 갖고 있는 사람들입니다. 교단, 전통, 신학은 말할 것도 없이 서로 다른 개성과 그룹, 그리고 다른 방법론과 스타일을 갖고 있습니다. 그러나 우리 중 많은 사람들이 공통적으로 가지고 있는 한 가지가 있습니다. 바로 깊은 불안감이며 복음만이 유일한 해독제입니다. 자신의 사역을 다른 목사의 사역과 비교하거나 다른 사람에게 감동을 주고 호감을 사고자 하는 욕구의 유혹에 빠지기 쉽습니다.

The only remedy for these ministry idolatries and all others is the gospel because it announces, among many things, we are justified, accepted, loved, and satisfied by God in Christ. Until pastors discover and embrace their identity in Christ—which is accomplished by Christ and received by faith, not works—they will keep trying to find their identity in their position, their preaching, their persona, and their programs.

While every pastor would affirm the gospel’s centrality to their ministry, we still need to remind each other this isn’t just some religious formality. Knowing how Christ’s finished work works in our own lives and ministries is vitally important. So how does it work? Why should we keep the good news of the finished work of Christ at the center of our hearts and the forefront of our minds? There are many reasons, but here are four of the more important ones.
